If you’re in the market for a stun gun, you probably want to know what is the highest voltage. It’s not just important for self defense – it’s also a key safety feature!

Stun guns work by delivering a debilitating shock that incapacitates an attacker. They are designed to do this by pressing against the target’s skin.

1. Million Volts

Stun guns deliver an electrical shock to target the central nervous system (CNS) of an attacker. They do this by passing high-voltage through the stun gun’s electrodes and into the body, which is why they are also known as electroshock weapons.

A stun gun’s voltage is not the only factor that determines its strength. It also depends on the charge behind it, which is measured in microcoulombs or uC.

The higher the voltage, the more penetrating power it will have. However, the true electrical output of a taser is much lower than the million-volt claim that some companies make.

The best taser is one that has between 25,000 and 50,000 volts. This will ensure that it will be effective no matter how thick an attacker’s clothing is.

2. 50,000 Volts

A taser (Axon Enterprise, Scottsdale, Arizona) uses barbed dart-like electrodes attached to wires that penetrate the victim’s skin and deliver an electric shock. The electricity triggers skeletal muscles to contract and motor neurons to send signals to cause a temporary paralysis.

Police-grade tasers have the potential to deliver as much as 50,000 volts over five seconds [1,2,3]. The electrical current stimulates presynaptic neurons and induces tonic-clonic contractions until a refractory period is reached, causing a paralysis of the affected person’s muscles.

Stun guns, on the other hand, use a trigger to propel two probes up to 21 feet at 180 feet per second through a target’s clothing or skin. The electrical current will travel up to two inches as long as both probes make contact.

3. 25,000 Volts

Voltage is the current, measured in milliamps (for my less nerdy readers, one amp is 1,000 milliamps). Stun guns work by sending a high-voltage shock through their electrodes and into a person’s skin.

The higher voltage the gun produces, the stronger it’ll hurt. That’s why police stun guns generally have a high voltage of 50,000 volts or more.

But if you’re looking to incapacitate an attacker quickly and effectively, the highest voltage isn’t necessarily what you want to focus on.

If you’re buying a stun gun, you should look for something with 25,000 volts or more. That’s enough to get electricity through thick clothing and keep an attacker from being able to move or fight back.

But remember, voltage doesn’t mean much unless the stun gun’s amps are high enough to deliver a devastating shock. And that’s not always the case.

4. 20,000 Volts

Stun guns are a powerful weapon that’s designed to deliver a stunning shock to disable an attacker. They can be used for self-defense as well as law enforcement purposes.

A stun gun is a handheld device with electrodes that fire projectile prongs that stimulate nerves and muscles in the target’s body. The device’s effects vary by the type of stun gun and mode of operation.

However, they all produce a high voltage pulse that produces pain when the prongs are pressed against the victim’s skin. This is the key to a successful stun attack.

Most stun gun models fall somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 volts, which is enough to disable an attacker who hasn’t worn protective clothing. Higher volts also allow for more charge delivery to the victim, which means faster immobilization.
