Stun guns and tasers are often heard about, but what exactly are they? They’re a popular personal defense weapon.

They deliver an electric shock on direct contact with a target when electricity passes between two metal prongs at the end of the device. This electric discharge can stun or incapacitate a target for up to five seconds.

1. What is a stun gun?

A stun gun is a weapon that uses electricity to inflict pain and immobilize an opponent. Stun guns are part of a family of electroshock weapons, which also includes tasers.

Most state laws and local ordinances regulate the possession of dangerous weapons, including stun guns. However, some states and municipalities ban them entirely.

It is also important to check the laws in your jurisdiction before buying a stun gun. In some cases, you may need a permit to own and carry one.

A stun gun can be a great tool for personal protection. But they can also be dangerous if you use them improperly or in the wrong circumstances.

2. What is the difference between a stun gun and a taser?

The difference between a stun gun and a taser is that a taser shoots electrified darts from a distance. Stun guns, on the other hand, need to make contact with the attacker’s body to be effective.

Tasers are much more effective against a determined attacker, because they can cause pain and confusion while also freezing them in place. This can give you enough time to run away or call for help.

Both stun guns and tasers have the same goal: temporarily paralyzing an attacker’s muscles to incapacitate them. However, there are differences between the two that you should know before you decide which one is best for your self-defense needs.

3. How do stun guns work?

Stun guns deliver a high voltage shock through contact with an attacker, temporarily incapacitating them and giving you enough time to escape. Though stun guns have only been around for a few decades, they remain one of the most popular methods of non-lethal self defense.

To be effective, a stun gun must send sufficient current, at a high enough voltage, for a long enough duration to create pain. This is measured by charge (current x time).

Stun guns can be surprisingly effective when used correctly. To be effective, you should hold a stun gun in close proximity to the attacker for at least a few seconds. A one-second contact will startle and repel the attacker, while two or more seconds will cause muscle spasms and confusion. Three or more seconds will leave the attacker unable to function in any way, which is what you want.

4. How do tasers work?

When a taser fires, it releases barbed electrodes into the target’s skin. The barbs pierce clothing and, once in contact with the target’s skin, trigger an electrical shock.

The shock is delivered via the electrodes, which are attached to a waveform generator that sends muscle-locking electric pulses into the target’s muscles. These pulses are about 50,000 volts and a few milliamps.

Unlike bolts from lightning, Taser pulses are short, only about a millisecond in length. This is because the pulses are about 30 times shorter than the chronaxie of skeletal muscle nerves.

5. What is the best stun gun?

The best stun gun will shoot a lot of electricity, and it needs to be strong enough to stop an attacker. Look for stun guns that have at least one million volts of power, which is enough to effectively subdue any attacker.

It should also be easy to use and have a safety mechanism that deactivates the weapon if an attacker grabs it or pulls the trigger. This simple feature can mean the difference between life and death for you and an attacker.

If you are looking for a good quality stun gun that is relatively inexpensive, check out the Vipertek VTS-880. This unit is small and comes with a built-in charger that doesn’t require an additional cable.
